Mentoring as a coach. While organic mentoring occurs within a learning community and is traditionally championed by coaches, teachers, school counselors, and social workers, alike support services leveraged through formalized mentoring yield positive outcomes for students, and in the case of this mixed methods research paper, student athletes. Sustained and robust evidence suggests effective mentoring is associated with positive personal and career outcomes for the mentor-mentee pairs as well as organizational benefits, including retention, productivity, and developing new leaders (Tisdell & Shekhawat, 2019).
