About this Event
Stumped when it comes to responding to students' needs outside of the classroom? Concerned about your students' health and well-being?
Join us to learn how to respond to the inevitable social and emotional challenges that arise during the school year.
This day-long workshop is designed to equip educators and advisors with the information, resources and strategies they need to support students' social and emotional health.
Every educator encounters students who are struggling socially and emotionally, but many report feeling ill-equipped to offer support beyond academics.
Young people who attend elite schools have two to three times the rates of anxiety, depression and substance use than national norms. Why are we seeing these outcomes and what role can adults in the school play to shift this culture?
Together we will unpack and reflect on the root causes of these behaviors and their impact on students, families and educators. Through research, scenario work and case studies, participants will learn and practice strategies for supporting student well-being.
Topics covered include:
- Best practices in effective prevention of high-risk behavior;
- Adolescent brain development;
- Key risk and protective factors present across the New York City independent and specialized school community;
- Warning signs of stress, anxiety and substance use in teens;
- Entry points for preventing harmful behaviors, setting boundaries, and promoting healthy decision making;
- Applying the strategic prevention framework when assessing student concerns;
- Strategies and best practices for support students' social and emotional health.
This training will run from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm.
Breakfast and snacks will be provided.
